Spikenard is a bushy herb, belonging to the same family as valerian and honeysuckle. It can grow up to about three feet tall and bears flowers that form a purple and pink pom-pom at the end of a long stem. It’s the root of the plant that is dried and distilled to make the fragrant oil.

Because of its popularity, spikenard is now endangered and its trade is regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (also known as CITES). Whereas the exportation of the crude rhizome is now banned in Nepal, Lush purchase the essential oil distilled from them, which is still authorised but highly regulated.
